*Due to the ongoing recalibration of our 21-22 season, this programme has been updated from the original program by the title From the New World.
It's spring, and love is non simply in the air, just in this delightful program likewise! Debussy's impressionistic Petit Suite, originally written for two pianos but orchestrated by his colleague Henri Büsser in the version known today with its opening movement featuring a solo flute, followed by highlighted snappy woodwinds and brass in the 2d move, and English horn and tambourine in the last 2, is embued with romance and excitement. Wagner's Sigfried Idyll is not a reference to his masterwork Ring wheel with its story of the gods, power and dear, but rather to his personal love story with second wife Cosima, whom he wrote the work for as a gift, and is named afterward their son. Two lines from the verse form dedication to her state, "For him and yous I had to express thanks in music—What lovelier reward could at that place be for deeds of love?" The endmost work of the program can be said to take its roots in beloved equally well, having begun not as a symphony merely as a serenade composed for a nuptials. Widely considered one of Mozart'due south pinnacle ten symphonies, this impressive work closes the evening in mode.

Most Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards
Schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music, Laura Cortese & the Trip the light fantastic Cards (vocals, fiddle, cello, bass/guitar) combine their extensive string music background with bold grooves that inspire stone-northward-curlicue hip swagger. Their edgy pop sensibility elegantly stretches the boundaries of what indie-folk can be. Their newest album, BITTER BETTER, was released on July 17, 2020 on Compass Records and the band is just back from supporting The Mountain Goats on their extended August 2021 US tour. Laura Cortese & The Trip the light fantastic toe Cards throw out the rulebook, creating a beautifully brilliant, musically unexpected canvas from their refreshingly unconventional perspective.

About Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light
"Though Sumner has roots in both the bluegrass and classical worlds, this is true-blue singer-songwriter folk through and through, too: achingly clear, and wide open to the world, with twang and tenderness enough to acquit united states of america through the burn of an unusually difficult year on its ain" - Embrace Lay Down
"Sumner's soft voice adds suspense to her meticulous songwriting" - WBUR/NPR
Rachel Sumner may be best known as the former guitarist and singer-songwriter from bluegrass cord phenom Twisted Pine, but information technology is in her recent venture as a solo artist that we are beginning to fully recognize her dynamism as a writer and performer. Whether she's fronting her new stringband, Traveling Lite, or actualization with only a guitar, y'all'll be mesmerized by her elegantly intricate arrangements and captivated past the delivery of each and every word. Now, y'all may be getting the idea that all of her songs are fragile, crystalline confessionals; they are almost certainly not. Rachel is both a Willie Nelson and a Patsy Cline of indie-folk - writing the heartfelt just catchy songs and carrying their emotional complexity with artlessness and an achingly beautiful yodel. And it is her diverse love of pop, classical, land and everything in betwixt that she draws upon to synthesize into her own unique sound.
In 2011, Rachel relocated from the w coast to Boston every bit a classical flutist, intending only to study Composition and Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music. She didn't play any other instruments - she hadn't fifty-fifty thought to strum a string on the guitar at that betoken. Rachel might have begun her formal training in air current ensembles and orchestras, but folk music was important to her family and had been fueling her musical passion from the very offset. While at schoolhouse, she somewhen found herself making friends with bluegrass musicians (some of whom would get her time to come band mates and collaborators) who encouraged and taught her to play basic chords on the guitar and introduced her to the canon of traditional music. In the brusk time since, Rachel has become one of the most vital voices in Boston's thriving roots music scene; she has written award-winning songs, toured internationally, and recorded and released four albums. Rachel'due south debut solo EP Anything Worth Doing was released in Nov 2018, and she has begun work on the follow-upward to that, her debut full-length record due out in 2022.
